Phone Information

From DoctorWhen

The Shared GC Google Voice number is (415) 475-8463.

This phone number is maintained by Allen under his personal account, so he will need to manage all changes to the phone system.

Generally we'll try to get all GC phones under that phone number so that when a team calls it gets routed to the phones in turn.

Getting on the shared number if you already use Google Voice

So, Google Voice has two annoying requirements:

  • Each GV account must have at least one non-GV number connected to it.
  • A non-GV number cannot be under more than one GV account.

This means that, if you already are a GV user, and have only one "real" phone connected to it, there's no easy way to get onto the shared GV number.

Here's one way to do it using notmynumber.net -- note that this will cost you a few dollars (and may need an active Paypal account).

Supposedly it is possible to do this by getting a free Voxox number, but I haven't tried that route.

  1. Go to http://www.notmynumber.net/ and sign up for a new number.
    1. You'll need to pay them some money to do so, possibly using Paypal.
    2. Connect that new number to your real phone number (let's call that REAL).
    3. Let's say that this new number is called NMN.
    4. So now, when someone calls NMN, they will actually call you at REAL.
  2. Go to your personal Google Voice account.
    1. Add NMN to that account.
    2. Remove REAL from that account.
    3. Now, when someone calls your GV number, it will go to NMN, which will go to REAL.
  3. Contact Allen. This is best if he's actually in the same room as you.
  4. Tell Allen to add REAL to the shared GC GV account.
    1. To make this process work, GV will need to call REAL and you'll need to enter a code that shows up on Allen's machine. (This is why it is best if he is in the same room as you).
  5. You're done!

Now, to undo all this process, say because the game is over:

  1. Go to your personal GV account, remove NMN, and add REAL.
    1. GV will try to "steal" REAL back from the shared GV account. This should be pretty self-explanatory.
