Don t Let Butterflies Flutter By - Make Them Welcome With Treats

From DoctorWhen

Who doesn't love butterflies, with their delicate wings Digital Advertising and Marketing pretty colours?

Due to loss of habitats and changing weather patterns, many populations are in decline. But there are plenty of things we can do to attract these winged wonders to our outside spaces.

Leaving a patch of nettles is one of the best ways of encouraging butterflies as Urtica dioica is the larval food source for the caterpillars of Red Admiral, Painted Lady, Small Tortoiseshell, Comma, and digital advertising and marketing strategy Peacock.

Females are fussy about where they will lay their eggs, so choose a sheltered, south-facing spot.

They prefer young nettles, so cut back one third in June, another third in July and the final third in August to allow new shoots to grow through. Take care not to remove any eggs that have been laid.

SCENT AND COLOUR

Caterpillars of different species feed on a variety of plants, so it is worth looking up what the butterflies local to your area prefer.

Where I live in the South Downs, we are lucky to have two rare varieties, the Chalkhill Blue and the Adonis Blue.

Their young feed on Horseshoe Vetch (Hippocrepis comosa), but although I often spot them on dog walks, I have yet to see one in my garden.

Once they have hatched, butterflies need nectar-rich plants to feed on and they can also take nutrients from overripe fruit, so leave some of these around the garden.

Scent Digital Advertising and Marketing colour are most attractive to them, and they prefer purple and yellow flowers, followed by pink and mauve, but they don't seem to like scarlet. Individual species often land on petals that blend in with their wing colour.

Buddleias are known as the butterfly bush because their lilac blooms are so attractive to this insect. I have a B. davidii, which can be invasive, but I prune it back hard every spring.

As an alternative, try noninvasive shrubs such as Mexican orange blossom (Choisya ternata), dogwood (Cornus sanguinea) and hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna).

Brambles (Rubus fruticosus) are attractive to many species of butterflies, as are flowering currants (Ribes sanguineum). Honeysuckle, lilac, lavender, and rosemary are other favourites.

GOOD FOOD

When it comes to garden flowers, there are many nectar-rich species to choose from including asters, aubretia, borage, honesty, Sweet Williams, sunflowers, sweet rocket and red-hot pokers.

Catmint is highly attractive, especially Nepeta Six Hills Giant, as are pale blue delphiniums and pink valerian (Centranthus ruber).

Wildflowers are one of the best environments for this winged insect, so don't weed too enthusiastically Digital Advertising and Marketing leave beneficial self-sown plants in place.

Purple thistle provides a feast, as does bugle, ox-eye daisy, cornflower, wild carrot, teasel, rosebay willowherb, meadowsweet, mallow, and dead nettle.

If you have a pond or boggy area, they love watermint (Mentha aquatica). Butterflies often drink from puddles and in hot, dry weather, you can make a ‘puddling pool' for them by mixing soil with water in a shallow pan.

Place a flat stone in the sunshine to give them somewhere to rest.
